Miniature circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced ball and loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head of Grand Duchess Charlotte facing left, circumscribed ‘CHARLOTTE GRANDE DUCHESSE DE LUXEMBOURG’; the reverse with the lesser coat of arms of Luxembourg, dated ‘19’ ‘40’ to left and right respectively; diameter 17.82mm (0.7 inch); on probably replaced correct ribbon. The Medal, instituted on 30 October 1945, is the highest military decoration of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg and is awarded to both Luxembourgeois and foreigners for distinguished military achievement and extraordinary deeds, regardless of rank. Amongst past recipients are Sir Winston Churchill, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Charles de Gaulle, Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery of Alamein and Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg. The medal is rare, especially in miniature.
