Miniature oval bronze medal with integral crown suspension; the face with the figure of Charity within a border inscribed ‘VOOR MENSCHLIEVEND HULPBETOON’ (For Humane Assistance); the reverse inscribed ‘DE KONIGIN AAN’ (the Queen to) and engraved with the attribution ‘B.N.SMITH’; height 30.5mm (1.2 inch); on original ribbon.
The Medal was instituted by Royal Decree of 19 June 1822 as a non-wearable award for humane action displaying bravery and self-sacrifice in a life-threatening situation. It was revised in 1855, 1890 and lastly in 1912 and may be awarded in gold, silver and bronze.
The medal is rare, especially in miniature.
