Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal with fixed ribbon bar; the face with the national emblem of the Sultanate of Oman, being a pair of crossed Omani swords in scabbards, a sheathed khunjar with belt attachments imposed, circumscribed in Arabic script above ‘Sultan Qaboos bin Said’ and ‘Sultan of Oman’ below; the reverse with a mountainous Dhofar landscape, circumscribed above in Arabic script ‘wisam al aa’talaa’ and ‘19 Jumaada al awwala’ below and dated ‘١٣٩٠’ (1390AH = 1970AD); a very slight edge knick at the base of the reverse; diameter 18.47mm (0.73 inch); on original ribbon. The medal was instituted on 23 July 1970 to mark the accession of Sultan Qaboos. It was awarded to serving members of the Omani Armed Forces, Police and Intelligence and to members of the Sultan’s Household. The medal was manufactured by Spink of London and probably no more than about 6,000 full-size medals were awarded. The medal is not often found in miniature.
