Miniature circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with national emblem of the Sultanate of Oman, being a pair of crossed Omani swords in scabbards, a sheathed khunjar with belt attachments imposed, circumscribed in Arabic script above ‘Sultan Qaboos bin Said’ and ‘Sultan of Oman’ below; the reverse with a dove held in a pair of hands, circumscribed above and below ‘The Sultan’s Medal for Preserving the Peace’ in Arabic script; diameter 19.35mm (0.76 inch); on original ribbon bearing the Sultan’s Operational Award, being a gilt Omani crown. The medal was instituted in 1980 and awarded to all members of the Armed Forces, Police and senior Ministry of Defence staff who had served at least one year after 1 July 1976 following the defeat of the Dhofar rebellion. The Operational Award was granted to those killed or wounded in action and for an act of bravery in the face of the enemy in the Southern Province after the same date.
