Miniature circular white metal medal with eyelet and trophy of arms suspension; the face with the arms of Portugal circumscribed ‘SERVIÇOS DISTINTOS’ (Distinguished Service) within a laurel wreath; the reverse plain; diameter 14.17mm (0.56 inch); on the ribbon for the Exemplary Conduct Medal. The Medal was instituted on 2 October 1863 as the Medal for Good Service (Medalha de Bons Serviços) in two classes to be awarded to military officers for extraordinary military service or outstanding acts. The Medal was amended on 11 September 1919 with the addition of a third class for non-commissioned officers and other ranks and again on 28 May 1946 when it was renamed the Medalha de Serviços Distintos (Distinguished Service Medal).
