Small miniature circular silver medal with laterally-pierced ball for ribbon suspension, the loop replaced; the face with the head and shoulders portrait in relief of King D. Luís I in military uniform, facing left, circumscribed ‘D. LUIZ I REI DE PORTUGAL’ (Don Luis I King of Portugal) and dated ‘1863’ below; the reverse inscribed ‘COMPORTAMEN. EXEMPLAR’ (Exemplary Conduct) within a circular laurel wreath, circumscribed ‘MEDALHA MILITAR’ (Military Medal); diameter 11.62mm (0.46 inch); without ribbon. The medal was instituted on 2 October 1863 in three classes, each with three grades. It was replaced in 1910 following the abolition of the Portuguese monarchy.
