Miniature scallop shell-shaped silver locket with eyelet and loop for suspension; the face with the Cross of St. James in red enamel (almost all the enamel now absent); the reverse with a view of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela from the west; the inside lid with the figure of St. James the Great on horseback; the inside base inscribed ’RECUERO / DE / SANTIAGO’ (Souvenir of Santiago); diameter 14.37mm (0.56 inch). St. James the Great, patron saint of Spain, is credited with the miraculous defeat of the Moors at the Battle of Clavijo in 841, appearing as a knight on horseback festooned with scallop shells, which inspired the founding of the Order of Santiago de Espada (St. James of the Sword) at Compostella, creating one of the greatest sites for Christian pilgrimage.
