Miniature circular gilt medal with eyelet and loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a mailed fist holding a key and a sword surmounted by the arms of Portugal and circumscribed ‘PORTUGUESES NOS FEITOS E NA LEALDAD’ (Portuguese our feats and our loyalty) within an laurel wreath; the reverse with the arms of Portugal circumscribed ‘COMPORTAMENTO EXEMPLAR’ (Exemplary Conduct) within a laurel wreath; diameter 15.71mm (0.62 inch); on original ribbon. The medal was instituted on 2 October 1863 in three classes, each with three grades, by King Don Luis I. It was replaced in 1910 following the abolition of the Portuguese monarchy and amended in 1946. The Gold Medal is awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks who complete thirty years' service without misdemeanour.
