Miniature circular silvered medal with claw and ribbon suspension bar; the face with a relief map of the African continent, circumscribed ‘AFRICA SERVICE MEDAL AFRIKADIENS-MEDALJE’; the reverse with a leaping springbok in a landscape; diameter 18.05mm (0.71 inch); on correct ribbon.
The Medal was instituted on 23 December 1943 and awarded to members of the Union Defence Forces, the South African Police and the South African Railways Police who volunteered for war service outside South Africa and served continuously for thirty days between 6 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.
The Medal was originally intended to recognise service on the African continent up to defeat of Axis forces in North Africa in 1943 but it was later awarded to recognise service worldwide up to the end of the war in 1945.
This example is of relatively recent manufacture.
