Miniature oval silver medal on eagle and swivel crown suspension; the face with a radiant rising sun over a Moroccan village, dated ‘1909-1927’, a crescent below inscribed ‘MARRUECOS’ (Morocco); the reverse inscribed ‘ESPAÑA, SIEMPRE DISPUESTA A TODA EMPRESA DE CIVILIZACION UNIVERSAL, CONTRIBUYÓ A LA DE MARRUECOS CON LA SANGRE PRECIADA DE SUS HIJOS, Y CON EL ORO DE SUS ARCAS, EL TRIUNFO DE SUS ARMAS Y LA CULTURA DE SUS METODOS SON LOS CIMIENTOS DE ESTA GRAN OBRA DE HUMANIDAD’ (Spain, always ready for a task of universal civilisation, contributed to the Moroccans, with the precious blood of its sons and its wealth of its coffers, a triumph of arms and the culture of its methods that were the foundations of this great work of humanity); height 25.48mm (1 inch), width 11.37mm (0.44 inch); on original ribbon. The medal was created on 21 November 1927 to commemorate the campaign in the north of Morocco (the Rif) against the forces of Abd el-Krim who had set up the Republic of the Rif in September 1921, having defeated a Spanish force at Annual. In 1925 a large combined Spanish and French force attacked in overwhelming numbers, defeating Abd el-Krim by 1926, although guerrilla warfare continued into 1927. The medal was awarded to French as well as Spanish military. The medal is rare in miniature.
