Miniature circular oxidised bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a full-length female figure, a laurel crown in her outstretched right hand, her left arm on a shield bearing a lion’s head, a radiant rising to the left beyond, inscribed below ‘AL MERITO / EN CAMPAÑA’, (for merit in battle), all within a laurel wreath, lions to either side; the reverse with the 1938 to 1975 arms of Spain, all within a laurel wreath, lions to either side; diameter 15.43mm (0.6 inch); on original ribbon with crossed swords citation. The medal was instituted on 29 June 1918 to be awarded for exceptional individual feats of heroism on the field of battle. This example was probably awarded during the Spanish Civil War or for action with German forces on the Eastern Front during World War II.
