Miniature gilt sunburst of thirteen rays, thirteen white enameled five-pointed stars between the rays, with loop and bar for ribbon suspension; the face with a blue cabuchon centrally; the reverse plain gilt; diameter 27.13mm (1.07 inch); on original ribbon. The Medal has its origins in the Army Distinguished Service Medal instituted by Act of Congress on 9 July 1918. The Act was amended on 6 July 1960 to allow the United States Air Force the authority to award its own Distinguished Service Medal. It is awarded ‘to service members who, while serving in any capacity with the Air Force, distinguish themselves by exceptionally meritorious service to the Government in a duty of great responsibility’. A very good example.
