Miniature circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced lug for ribbon suspension; the face with the kneeling figure of Hermes facing left, releasing an eagle with wings displayed from his open hands, circumscribed ‘AIRMAN'S MEDAL’; the reverse inscribed ‘FOR VALOR’ within a circular stylised laurel wreath; diameter 17.88mm (0.7 inch); on original ribbon with brooch bar mounted for wear with maker’s mark ‘H.L.P. / GI’ (for His Lordship’s Products Inc. of Hauppauge, New York). The Medal was instituted on 6 July 1960 to be awarded ‘to service members who, while serving in any capacity with the Air Force, distinguish themselves by heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy’.
