Miniature circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced lug for ribbon suspension; the face with a Navy cruiser at speed, travelling from right to left, a B24 aeroplane overhead, a sinking U-boat in the foreground, large industrial buildings in the background, circumscribed above ‘AMERICAN CAMPAIGN’; the reverse with a bald American eagle perched on a rock centrally, dated ‘1941 1945’ to the left, inscribed ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’ above right; diameter 19.20mm (0.76 inch); on original ribbon with brooch bar mounted for wear with partly illegible maker’s mark ‘GE...../NY’, probably ‘GEMSCO N.Y.’ for General Merchandising Co. of Milford, Connecticut. The medal was instituted on 6 November 1942 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to be awarded for qualifying service between 7 December 1941 and 2 March 1946 in the American theatre of operations. The first recipient was General George C. Marshall on 17 December 1947. A good example.
