Miniature circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a faceted twelve-pointed star, a stylised laurel wreath between the points, bearing a circular central medallion with crossed swords imposed on an upright torch, a five-pointed star to either side, all within a stylised laurel wreath; the reverse with a cuirass upper centre from the Army Seal, circumscribed ‘ARMY NATIONAL GUARD FOR ACHIEVEMENT’; contact marks to the reverse from wear; diameter 16.24mm (0.64 inch); on original ribbon with slide for bar-mounting. The Medal was instituted on 3 March 1971 to be awarded to those of the rank of colonel and below for four years’ service with a Reserve Component for exemplary, efficient and loyal service. There are versions for the United States Army Reserve and, as in this example, the Army National Guard.
