Miniature circular gilt insignia in the form of a radiant blazing sun with loop to the upper reverse and ring for ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central gilt medallion with a full-length bending female figure, a baby on her back, in a mountainous landscape pouring water from a large pitcher, a radiant sun to the right, all within a deep red enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘THE ORDER OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE • UGANDA’; the reverse plain gilt; diameter 18.68mm (0.73 inch); without ribbon. The Order was instituted in three classes by President Idi Amin Dada in 1972 to be awarded for outstanding service to the state and could be awarded to both Ugandan citizens and foreigners. Designed by Spink and Son Ltd of London, it was Uganda’s most senior order at the time until suppressed after the fall of Amin on 11 April 1979. The Order is rare.
