Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal with claw and ribbon bar suspension; the face with crossed African shields imposed on crossed spears centrally bearing a cockerel erect, an axe in its right claw, circumscribed ‘FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE’; the reverse with the arms of the Republic of Kenya; diameter 18.4mm (0.72 inch); on the ribbon of the Order of the Golden Heart, 3rd class Service Medal. The Medal was instituted in 1966 to be awarded for exceptional merit and acts of bravery and devotion to duty. This example dates from after the period of the presidency of Daniel Arap Moi, 1978 to 2002, during which his effigy appeared on the reverse in the place of the arms of the Republic.
