Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal with laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the head of President Jomo Kenyatta facing left, circumscribed above ‘H.E. MZEE JOMO KENYATTA’ and circumscribed below on two lines ‘FIRST PRESIDENT OF / THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA’; the reverse with a lion rampant, a spear upright in its right paw, above a mountainous landscape; diameter 18.4mm (0.72 inch); on original ribbon. The Medal was instituted in December 1963 and awarded to Kenyan and seconded British personnel for 30 days' active service in operations against the Somali Shifta in north-east Kenya between 12 December 1963 and 30 November 1967. The medal is rare.
