Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal on laterally loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head of President Daniel Arap Moi facing right, circumscribed above ‘HIS EXCELLENCY DANIEL T. ARAP MOI’ and ‘PRESIDENT OF / THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA’ below; the reverse with the arms of Kenya centrally within a ring, inscribed ‘NYAYO’ (Footsteps) to left and right, circumscribed above ‘MIAKA ISHIRINI YA UHURU’ (Twenty-years of freedom), dated below ’12 DEC 63 – 12 DEC 83’; diameter 18.0mm (0.71 inch) on original ribbon with cupro-nickel bar ‘1963 * UHURU*1983’ bar. The ‘footsteps’ were those of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, first president of Kenya, in whose footsteps Daniel Arap Moi liked to present himself as treading. The Medal was one of a series of commemorative medals marking anniversaries of independence.
