Miniature cupro-nickel decagonal medal with scroll and laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the head of President Daniel Arap Moi facing right, circumscribed above ‘HIS EXCELLENCY DANIEL T. ARAP MOI’ and ‘PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA’ below; the reverse with an arched triangle centrally with clasped hands, a dove of peace above, a heart below, inscribed ‘PEACE’ ‘LOVE’ ‘UNITY’ to the left, right and lower edges respectively, circumscribed above ‘FIRST TEN YEARS OF GREAT NYAYO ERA’ and dated ’14 OCT 78 – 14 OCT 88’ below; diameter 18.1mm (10.71 inch); on original ribbon, glue residue to the upper reverse. The Medal was instituted to mark the 10th anniversary of the presidency of Daniel Arap Moi on 14 October 1988. The ‘nyayo’ (footsteps in Swahili) were those of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, first president of Kenya, in whose footsteps Daniel Arap Moi liked to present himself as treading.
