Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal with integral ribbon bar; the face with the full-face head and shoulders portrait of Daniel Arap Moi circumscribed ‘HIS EXCELLENCY DANIEL T. ARAP MOI THE 2ND PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA’; the reverse with the arms of the Republic of Kenya centrally, inscribed ‘NYAYO’ (Footsteps) to left and right, circumscribed above ‘PRESIDENTIAL INSTALLATION’ and ‘THE 14th OCTOBER 1978’ below; diameter 20.3mm (0.8 inch); on original ribbon, glue residue to the upper reverse. The Medal was instituted to mark the installation of Daniel Arap Moi as second President of the Republic of Kenya on 14 October 1978. The ‘nyayo’ (footsteps in Swahili) were those of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, first president of Kenya, in whose footsteps Daniel Arap Moi liked to present himself as treading.
