Miniature ten-pointed faceted red enamel star with graduated beaded silver rays between the points, on swivel silver bow suspension; the face with a circular central red enamel medallion bearing the word ‘استقلال’ (Independence) in silver Arabic script within a beaded border; the reverse plain; diameter 13.59mm (0.54 inch); the tip of the lower ray slightly bent; on original ribbon with a rosette on a gold braid ground indicating an award of the Grand Officer class, slight glue residue to the upper reverse. The Order was instituted on 6 September 1956 by Mohamed el-Amine, Bey of Tunis in five classes to be awarded for military, civil and public service. The first version bore the arms of Tunisia but this was replaced by the word ‘Independence’ soon after the declaration of a republic. Awards of the rank of Grand Officer are limited to two hundred extant at any one time (excluding awards to foreigners).
