Miniature cupro-nickel medal on fixed suspension bar; the face with the full-face portrait of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then Emir of Abu Dhabi, an Arabic circumscription above; the reverse with a falcon with wings displayed centrally, an Arabic circumscription above, circumscribed below ‘ADDF INAUGURATION 1966’; diameter 18.11mm (0.71 inch); on original ribbon. The Medal was instituted in 1966 following the overthrow of Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his replacement by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan on 6 August 1966. It was awarded to those serving in the newly-formed Abu Dhabi Defence Force created under the guidance of officers from the Trucial Oman Scouts. The Abu Dhabi Defence Force was incorporated into the Federal Armed Forces of the United Arab Emirates in 1976. The medal is rare.
