Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal on fixed palas palm decorated suspension bar; the face with the arms of Malaysia, inscribed ‘JASA MALAYSIA’ below; the reverse with a stippled map of Malaysia, inscribed below ‘P.J.M’; diameter 18.02mm (0.71 inch); on original ribbon. The Medal was instituted on 3 March 2004 to be awarded for service during the Malayan Emergency after the independence of Malaysia on 31August 1957 to 1960, the Second Malayan Emergency of 1968 to 1989 and the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation (konfrontasi) of 1962 to 1966. It was awarded both to members of the Malaysian Armed Forces and to Commonwealth Forces from Australia, Fiji, India, Nepal, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Members of the Malaysian Armed Forces must have served for six months between 1 January 1969 and 2 December 1989 for operations against the Communist Party of Malaya or between 1 January 1969 and 17 October 1990 for operations against the North Kalimantan Communist Party. Members of Commonwealth forces must have served in Malaysia for at least ninety days between Malaysian independence on 31 August 1957 and 31 December 1966 or in Singapore between 31 August 1957 and 9 August 1965. Those personnel who served in an indirect or support role must have served at least six months during the qualifying periods of service. The Medal was awarded regardless of length of service where that service was cut short as a result of fatality or injury in these areas. A very good example.
