Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal with laterally-pierced ball for ribbon suspension; the face with a Cacique crown centrally, circumscribed ‘ONE PEOPLE • ONE NATION • ONE DESTINY’ (motto of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana) and ‘GUYANA’ at the base; the reverse with a mountainous landscape viewed from the sea topped with a Guyanese flag, stylised clouds above; diameter 18.42mm (0.72 inch); on original ribbon. The Medal was instituted in 1970 following Guyana becoming a republic and was awarded to those who served on the border with Venezuela preventing incursions and countering the Venezuelan-backed abortive uprising in the long-disputed Orinoco basin territory.
