Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal with laterally-pierced ball for ribbon suspension; the face with a Cacique crown centrally, circumscribed ‘ONE PEOPLE • ONE NATION • ONE DESTINY’ (motto of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana) and ‘GUYANA’ at the base; the reverse with crossed sabres centrally, circumscribed ‘MILITARY SERVICE MEDAL’; diameter 18.43mm (0.72 inch); on original ribbon. The Medal was instituted in 1970 following Guyana becoming a republic and is awarded to members of the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana People's Militia and the Guyana National Service for exceptional service above and beyond the call of duty or for gallantry in action.
