Miniature circular gilt medal with lateral loop and ribbon suspension bar; the face with a twenty-two point star with faceted arms, with a circular central medallion with a desert scene within a wreath; the reverse plain gilt; diameter 20.61mm (0.81 inch); on original ribbon. The Star was one of a number of awards instituted in December 1981 after the South West Africa Police was reinstated as a separate organisation in April of that year. It was awarded for particularly meritorious or exemplary service or, until 1986, thirty years’ service. It became obsolete when South Africa handed over control of the territory to the United Nations in April 1989.
