Miniature white metal medal of six-lobed shape, with integral inverted triangular ribbon bar; the face with a radiant sun above a desert scene, a Welwitschia plant in the foreground; the reverse plain; width 19.49mm (0.77 inch); on a correct paper representation of the ribbon. The Star was one of a number of awards instituted in December 1981 after the South West Africa Police was reinstated as a separate organisation in April of that year and was awarded for twenty years’ service. It became obsolete when South Africa handed over control of the territory to the United Nations in April 1989.
