Miniature hexagonal bronze medal on laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the Zimbabwe bird centrally within a laurel wreath imposed on a five-pointed faceted star; the reverse with a mountainous landscape with a winding river below, a standing and a kneeling figure to the right, each with a rifle pointing upwards, a radiant sun to the upper left inscribed ‘ZIMBABWE’; diameter 16.74mm (0.66 inch); on original ribbon. The Medal was instituted in October 1980 following Zimbabwean independence and awarded to those who had contributed prior to independence on 18 April 1980 to the establishment of the country.
