Miniature gilt cross pattée with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing the full-face head of an African lion within a red enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘UNITY AND FREEDOM’, the motto of Malawi, the arms each with a small panel on a striated ground; the reverse plain; diameter 19.93mm (0.78 inch); on original ribbon. The Order was instituted in 1967 in five classes and a Medal, as in this example, to be awarded for distinguished and outstanding service to the people of Malawi to both military and civilians, Malawian citizens and foreigners.
