Miniature gilt-edged green and black enamel cross pattée with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing the full-face head of an African lion within a red enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘UNITY AND FREEDOM’, the motto of Malawi, the arms each with a small black enamel panel on a striated green enamel ground; the reverse plain; diameter 18.27mm (0.72 inch); what appear to be file marks to the left and right edges of the central medallion of the face; on original ribbon. The Order was instituted in 1967 in five classes and a Medal to be awarded for distinguished and outstanding service to the people of Malawi to both military and civilians, Malawian citizens and foreigners.
