Miniature circular cupro-nickel medal with scroll and laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the head and shoulders portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right and wearing the Tudor Crown, circumscribed ‘QUEEN ELIZABETH II’; the reverse with the arms of Malawi centrally, circumscribed ‘MALAWI INDEPENDENCE’ above and dated ‘6TH JULY 1964’ below; diameter 18.43mm (0.72 inch); on original ribbon.
The Medal was instituted on 29 May 1964 to be awarded to those serving in the Armed Forces, Police and Civil Service on the day of independence and ‘other residents in Malawi who have rendered outstanding public service to the country’ ‘all on a basis of meritorious and faithful service’. The British colony of Nyasaland became the Republic of Malawi on 6 July 1964.
Malawi is a small country and the medal is not often found, especially in miniature.
