Sudan Pair: *** Queen‘s Sudan Medal, 1896-1897. Miniature circular silver medal on swivel ribbon bar suspension; the face with the Jubilee bust of Queen Victoria facing left, circumscribed ‘VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX’ (Victoria Queen and Empress); the reverse with the laurel-crowned winged seated figure of Victory, a palm branch in her right hand, a laurel crown in her left, standards to either side, a plaque inscribed ‘SUDAN’ below; diameter 17.76mm (0.7 inch). The Medal was instituted in 1899 to be awarded to those involved in the reconquest of the Sudan in 1896 and 1897. *** Khedive‘s Sudan Medal 1896-1908 with ‘Khartoum’ clasp. Circular silver medal on swivel ribbon bar with original ‘KHARTOUM’ clasp; the face with the elaborate tughra of Khedive Abbas Hilmi II, dated ‘۱۳۱۴’ (AH1314 = AD1897) below; the reverse with a trophy of arms, inscribed in Arabic characters below and again dated ‘۱۳۱۴’; diameter 17.46mm (0.69 inch). The medal was instituted in February 1897 and awarded to British and Egyptian soldiers and Royal Navy personnel who participated in the reconquest of Dongola and subsequent pacification in the south. *** The medals are age-toned and on possibly replaced correct ribbons and bar-mounted for wear. A good and rare miniature pair.
