Miniature silver-gilt eight-pointed rayed star with loop to the reverse for ribbon suspension; the face with a central silver-gilt oval medallion bearing the arms of the Republic of Zambia within an orange-yellow enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘Distinguished Service ? Republic of Zambia’; the reverse plain gilt with maker’s mark of Spink & Son Ltd of London and with silver assay marks for London, 1997; width 18.03mm (0.71 inch); without ribbon (deep blue with orange-yellow edges). The Order was instituted on 23 October 1965 to mark the first anniversary of Zambian independence and amended on 28 April 1997, the arms of Zambia replacing the head of former President Kenneth Kaunda. The Order is rarely found.
