Miniature silver eight-pointed rayed star with African Fish Eagle suspension; the face with a central silver oval medallion bearing the arms of the Republic of Zambia within an orange-yellow enamel ring inscribed in silver letters ‘Distinguished Service ? Republic of Zambia’; the reverse plain silver with maker’s mark of Spink & Son Ltd of London and with silver assay marks for London, 1997; width 18.09mm (0.71 inch); without ribbon (deep blue with orange-yellow edges). The Order was instituted on 23 October 1965 to mark the first anniversary of Zambian independence and amended on 28 April 1997, the arms of Zambia replacing the head of former President Kenneth Kaunda. The African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) is the national bird of Zambia and appears on its coat of arms and flag. The Order is rarely found.
