Miniature circular gilt medal with scroll and laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the crowned head and shoulders portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, circumscribed ‘QUEEN ELIZABETH II’; the reverse with the arms of Sierra Leone centrally, circumscribed ‘FOR GENERAL SERVICE • SIERRA LEONE’; diameter 18.14mm (0.71 inch); on original ribbon with ‘CONGO’ bar, with brooch bar mounted for wear; with original waxed envelope. The Medal was instituted in 1965 to be awarded to British forces on secondment to the Royal Sierra Leone Military Forces and was awarded for service in Sierra Leone and adjacent countries, provided that their service had not been acknowledged by any other General Service Medal. This condition of award and the small number of military involved make the medal rare. A superb example.
