Miniature blackened bronze cross pattée with eyelet and loop for ribbon suspension; the face with silvered crossed swords and a stylised snowflake imposed centrally; the reverse plain; diameter 15.71mm (0.62 inch); on a correct paper representation of the ribbon.
The Cross was instituted in 1940 and awarded to members of the 1st and 2nd Divisions who defended the Central Karelian Isthmus north of St Petersburg (then Leningrad) during the Winter War against invading Soviet forces.
Crosses awarded to the 1st Division had a metal helmet on the ribbon so this award would have been to a member of the 2nd Division.
