Miniature blue enamel cross pattée with eyelet and loop for ribbon suspension; the face with stylised spruce branches between the lateral and upper arms of the cross and on the upper arm of the cross, a central white enamel ‘S’ (for Suojeluskunta = Civil Guards) with an upright sword imposed; the reverse plain; diameter 16.18mm (0.64 inch); on original ribbon with wire top loop for suspension.
The Cross was instituted in 1968 and awarded retrospectively to veterans of the Civil Guard during the War of Independence, 17 January to 15 May 1918, the Winter War, 30 November 1939 to 13 March 1940 and the Continuation War, 25 June 1941 to 19 September 1944.
A new version without the ‘S’ and upright sword was introduced in 1983, reflecting the passing of time, to be awarded to those who uphold and support their heritage.
