Large six-pointed silver star with graduated rays, with chain suspension and loop for neck ribbon with ‘poinçon de crabe’ and ‘800’ silver hallmark; the face with a circular central polychrome enamel medallion with a lion passant guardant in a desert landscape, a scimitar in its right forepaw, a radiant sun beyond with five beams within concentric green and red enamel rings; the reverse plain with maker’s mark of Arthus Bertrand & Cie. of Paris; diameter 67.53mm (2.66 inch); on original full neck ribbon with ties; with buttonhole rosette; in fitted embossed leatherette case of issue, a slight scuff to the lower left of the lid and a small loss of surface from the upper reverse, maker’s mark of Arthus Bertrand & Cie. of Paris to the inside of the lid, the Iranian imperial arms embossed in gilt on the lid.

The Order was instituted in 1939 but has its origins in the Qajar Order of the Lion and the Sun pounded in the early 19th Century that was suppressed after the Pahlavis took power in 1925.

This example was awarded to the Ambassador to Tehran of a major European country in the early 1970s.
