Circular bronze medal with integral ribbon bar; the face with a naked warrior on horseback facing left, a raised sword in his right hand, a winged Victory to the left leading the horse, a laurel wreath in her raised right hand, a serpent, hammer and sickle being trodden underfoot; the reverse with a map of Spain, inscribed ‘GUERRA POR LA LIBERACION Y UNIDAD DE ESPAÑA 17 JULIO 1936’ (War for the Liberation and Unity of Spain 17 July 1936), a winged head above, the Spanish crowned arms below; on an old ribbon for the Cross (rather than the Medal) Commemorative of the Spanish Campaign.

The Medal was formally instituted on 5 September 1942, on the basis of previous unofficial initiatives dating back to 1938, to recognize the service of members of the Italian Legion in the Spanish Civil War. Initial Italian volunteers from the ranks of the fascist militia were eventually joined in Spain by ‘volunteers’ from the Italian army and air force serving in the Corpo Truppe Volontarie (Corps of Volunteer Troops).
