Circular silver medal with integral loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head of King Vittorio Emanuele III facing right circumscribed ‘VITTORIO EMANUELE III RE D’ITALIA’, signed ‘L•GIORGI’; the reverse inscribed ‘LIBIA’ within a circular laurel wreath; maker’s mark a crowned ‘Z’ for Regio Zecca below; age-toned; on probably original but shortened ribbon. The medal was instituted by Royal Decree 1144 on 6 September 1913 and awarded to the expeditionary force, colonial troops and attached civilians who served in Libya after 18 October 1912, date of the Peace Treaty with the Ottoman Empire. The medal was manufactured in silver by Zecca but various other private versions in both silver and bronze are known. A nice example.
