Circular silvered bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the heads of the Prince of Piedmont and Princess Marie José of Belgium facing left, signed ‘A·CAMPI’; the reverse with a crowned eagle, wings outstretched centrally, an escutcheon on its breast bearing the arms of Savoy, crowned escutcheons to the left and right, that on the left bearing the arms of Belgium, that on the right the arms of Savoy, a plaque below inscribed ‘LL.AA.RR. UMBERTO E MARIA DI SAVOIA 8 GENNAIO 1930’ (Their Royal Highnesses Umberto and Maria of Savoy, 8 January 1930); slight wear to the silvering of the raised parts; on replaced suspension ring and ribbon in the national colours of Italy. Umberto, Prince of Piedmont (the title of the Italian Crown Prince) was born in 1904, the son of King Vittorio Emanuele III and Queen Elena. He followed a mainly titular military career and married Princess Marie of Belgium in 1930. Princess Marie José was the daughter of Albert I, King of the Belgians and his wife, Queen Elisabeth. Umberto and Marie José had four children. He inherited the throne on the death of his father in May 1946 but within a month the monarchy had been abolished. They separated soon after. He died in 1983 while Marie José lived on till 2001. A good commemorative medal.
