Circular bronze medal with eyelet and original loops for ribbon suspension; the face with the seated naked male figure of a scuptor in the act of engraving a memorial with a series of dates and campaigns, the earliest 1774, the last ‘1918 ALBANIA’, signed ‘A.O’, two eagles in flight above left, stylised mountains and sea to the left, inscribed ‘NEC RECISA RECEDIT’ below (Latin = Even if broken, we do not retreat – motto of the Guardia di Finanza); the reverse with the seated figure of a griffon, its right front leg resting on a treasure chest, a flaming grenade bearing the arms of Savoy imposed on crossed bugle and powderhorn and crossed muskets to either side, a royal crown at the top, circumscribed ‘R. GVARDIA DI FINANZA’; traces of gilding, now absent; on a recent ribbon in the colours of the Guardia di Finanza. The inscription on the monument implies a date soon after the end of World War I. The Guardia di Finanza has its origins in the Light Troops Legion (Legione Truppe Leggere) created by King Vittorio Amadeo III of Sardinia on 5 October 1774 with the purpose of protecting the kingdom’s borders and specifically controlling the import and export of products, protecting duties and preventing fraud. The motto ‘Nec recisa recedit’ was applied to the Guard by the Italian soldier poet Gabriele d’Annunzio during World War I and formally adopted in 1933.
