Circular silvered bronze medal with eyelet and loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the Destroyer Nicolò Zeno under way at sea, traversing right to left, a crown with pendelia at the base above the crowned letter ‘Z’ for the Regio Zecca (Royal Mint), circumscribed above ‘R. ESPLORATORE NICOLO’/ ZENO’, all within a beaded border; the reverse with an early three-masted Venetian galley in full sail at sea, traversing right to left, the seven stars of the Plough above left, a crowned escutcheon with the arms of the Zeno family at the base, all within a beaded border,; diameter 23.84mm (0.94 inch). The Nicolò Zeno was a Navigatori class destroyer built by CNQ of Fiume and commissioned on 27 May 1930. These ships were rather larger than other Italian destroyers of the period and were classed as ‘Esploratori’ (Scouts). She was scuttled at Trieste on 9 September 1943 following the Italian Armistice to prevent her falling into German hands. Nicolò Zeno (ca. 1326 to ca.1402) was a member of the Zeno family, prominent in the Venetian aristocracy, who held the lucrative franchise for shipping between Venice and the Holy Land during the Crusades. Nicolò and his brother are renowned for their writings on their early voyages of discovery.
