Gilt bronze circular medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the arms of the Norwegian army (the crowned lion of Norway holding the axe of St Olav between upright swords) within an oak wreath; the reverse inscribed ‘HÆREN FOR FRED OG FRIHET’ (Army for Peace and Freedom); on original ribbon mounted for wear. The medal is awarded to Norwegians on successful completion of military service in the Army (Hæren) which is mandatory for males and voluntary for females. The Norwegian army has a long and distinguished history of contributions to peacekeeping forces. Following intervention in Korea, Gaza and the Congo, Norwegian forces were active in Lebanon with UNIFIL from 1978 to 1999. Involvement in UN missions in Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iraq followed, as did NATO commitments to SFOR in Bosnia, KFOR in Kosovo and ISAF in Afghanistan. Norwegian soldiers are currently serving in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. Norway has a population of about 4.6 million and its awards are, as a consequence, relatively hard to find. A good example.
