Circular bronze medal with integral loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head and shoulders of an Alsacienne in traditional dress facing left, circumscribed ‘ALSACE 1870 - 1914’, signed ‘G. PRUD’HOMME’ (for the great artist Georges-Henri Prudhomme, 1873-1947); the reverse with a view of Strasbourg Cathedral, a house in the right foreground with storks nesting on the chimney, an ivy-clad plaque at the base; Paris Mint bronze hallmark on the edge; on a new French tricolor ribbon.
The medal was produced early in World War I in anticipation of the reincorporation of Alsace into the French Republic and used for a variety of different purposes, including award by the Red Cross for relief work in Alsace and to military such as the First and Seventh Territorial Battalions of the Chasseurs Alpins who were prominent in the liberation of Alsace.
