Miniature gilt metal cross pattée, the plain arms with three edge lines, with eyelet for ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing the crowned cipher of King Friedrich Wilhelm III; the reverse with a circular central medallion bearing the inscription ‘KRIEGS / VERDIENST’ above a laurel spray; diameter 15.15mm (0.6 inch); on replaced correct ribbon.

The Cross was instituted on 27 February 1864 and was the highest bravery award of the Kingdom of Prussia for non-commissioned officers and enlisted soldiers. 

It was awarded just 38 times before World War I and 1,773 during that conflict.  It was last awarded on 8 November 1918.
