Miniature circular silver medal with eyelet for ribbon suspension; the face with the crowned cipher of King Wilhelm I (Emperor Wilhelm I of Germany); the reverse inscribed ‘KRIEGS / VERDIENST’ (War Merit) within a laurel wreath; diameter 14.3mm (0.56 inch); on replaced correct ribbon.
The Medal was instituted by King Wilhelm I on 27 February 1864 to be awarded to non-commissioned officers and enlisted men for merit in the face of the enemy, usually in circumstances where the Iron Cross would have been awarded, had it been available.
