Circular bronze medal with crossed swords and loop suspension; the face with the arms of the town of Dunkirk imposed on an anchor within a laurel wreath; the reverse with an antique oil lamp and inscribed ‘DUNQUERQUE 1940’ within a laurel wreath; on original ribbon.

The Medal was created by the Association Nationale des Anciens Combattants du Secteur Fortifié des Flandres et de Dunquerque (National Association of Former Combattants of the Fortified Sector of Flanders and Dunkirk) to be awarded to those who, between 29 May and 3 June 1940, defended the Dunkirk pocket and were taken prisoner having sacrificed their own freedom to ensure the escape to England of 360,000 men, of whom some 250,000 were British, to continue the fight against Germany.
