Circular silver medal on swivel crown suspension; the face with the head of Rainier III, Prince of Monaco facing right, circumscribed ‘RAINIER III • PRINCE DE MONACO • 1989’, SIGNED ‘ER’; the reverse with the cipher of Prince Rainier imposed on the arms of Monaco, circumscribed ‘QUARANTIÈME ANNIVERSAIRE DE REGNE’ (fortieth anniversary of the reign) and dated ‘1949-1989’ below, silver hallmarked; on original ribbon mounted for wear; with original ribbon bar mounted for wear; in original case of issue with the cipher of Prince Rainier and dated ‘1949 - 1989’ on the lid. The medal was issued on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the reign of Prince Rainier on 9 May 1989. His Serene Highness, Rainier III, Prince of Monaco was born on 31 May 1923. Educated in England, Switzerland and France, he fought in World War II as an artillery officer, his personal bravery during a German counter-attack in Alsace leading to the award of the Croix de Guerre with regimental citation and a chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur. He inherited the throne of Monaco from his maternal grandfather, Prince Louis II, on 9 May 1949. He married the renowned American actress Grace Kelly in 1956 and they had three children. Princess Grace died in a car crash in 1982 in somewhat mysterious circumstances. Prince Rainier died on 6 April 2005, being succeeded by his son, Albert II, Prince of Monaco. During his long reign, Prince Rainier transformed the economy and reputation of Monaco and reformed the constitution, leaving the principality infinitely stronger and more stable. A superb example of a rare medal.
